What to expect at a class

Our classes are suitable for both beginners and more experienced meditators. Anyone can practice meditation and everyone is welcome to attend. Most of our evening classes run for an hour and a half. We meditate sitting on chairs to ensure that everyone is comfortable.

The general structure of an evening meditation class is as follows:

  • Short Buddhist prayers to prepare for meditation
  • Simple guided meditation
  • Teaching on an aspect of Buddhist meditation
  • Another meditation and questions & answers
  • After the class everyone is welcome to stay for light refreshments.

Attending the class

The classes are organised as short courses, usually from 3-7 weeks long. You can attend the whole course or simply drop in whenever you can as each class is self-contained.

Meditation Classes FAQ

Weekly meditation classes mainly take place in the evening although we do run several lunchtime meditation classes. Bodhisattva Centre now runs weekly classes at several venues around the South East of England. The classes cover all the essential ideas in Buddhism in a simple, structured and down-to-earth way, and enable us to learn how to meditate and then make steady progress.

The classes begin with simple prayers, followed by a relaxation meditation. Then there will be a talk covering the basics of meditation and Buddhism, emphasizing how these can be applied to daily life. Finally, if there is time, there is a second meditation and questions-and-answers. Buddhist books will be on sale for further reading. The classes conclude with light refreshments and an opportunity to get to know people informally.
